What are the risks of letting a swollen thyroid and other thyroid problems go untreated?
I have a swollen thyroid, and have for a long time now. It hurts sometimes, I have had trouble sleeping, and I haven’t been able to sing well lately. My neck has just felt right an sore.. Esspecially after singing. But my parents seem unconcered and won’t take me to the doctor. Are there any big risks if I don’t see a doctor about this?
If You can quit Singing, you could go on for QUITE awhile with your Thyroid the way it Is. But eventually you WILL have to see a Doctor- because you will either start Losing OR Gaining- a LOT of Weight… If You KEEP Singing, That Day could come a LOT Sooner…
Yes, there are risks. You may need surgery some day and have your thyroid removed. My thyroid used to be quite noticeable. I got it to shrink by taking kelp. Adelle Davis in her book, Let’s Get Well, recommends 3 mg of iodine per day for a healthy thyroid. That is 20 kelp pills per day since they are very weak. I took 20 pills per day for over a year and my thyroid is smaller now.
it is something that should be checked out as a swollen thyroid could be a symptom of something worse
Death! That should be enough right there to get your parents on the ball!
You need testing for ANTIBODIES as well as TSH. TSH ‘norm’ should be .3 – 3 (w/ most feeling best at < 2) but would not matter if ANTIBODIES are present. Indicative of Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Thyroiditis…main cause of HypOthyroid & is worse (…OR Graves Disease - HypERthyroid).
WARNING: Doctors seem not to want to find/treat thyroid disease. You may have to go to more than one doctor before you get the right tests, interpretation, and treatment. Best wishes.
