I’m on Synthroid for my hypothyroidism and as ridiculous as I know it is, I have the hardest time taking my pill everyday. I have to take it 2-3 hours after eating or 45 minutes before eating…my days are so busy it seems like whenever I remember to take my pill I’m on some kind of break and am also just about to eat or have just eaten. I was wondering if anybody knows of any method of taking synthetic thyroid hormones besides taking a daily pill? The idea came from a talk with my sister about how they have so many different methods of birth control now (patch, implant, ring, etc.) they should make all medications available in various forms for those of us who are bad at taking a pill everyday.
I’m seeing my thyroid doctor this friday so I’m planning on discussing this with him, but I figured having any information I can before I go is a good idea, and I haven’t been able to find any info through doing a search on yahoo.
Thanks for any ideas/comments!

I am a youngish person, and I am tired of weighing 200 pounds. I just reached that weight yesterday, and it is depressing. I wanted to know what kinds of exercise should I do that would be most effective, and what kind of diet plan would be best. None of the pills for hypothyroidism will work fo rme, so please do not suggest those. Thanks, and any help is greatly appriciated!
I’d swear I have hypothyroidism, but my labs always come back normal range. Should I see and endocrinologist anyway? Or would that be a waste of time/money?
My mother had a goiter and had to take thyroid medicine so it’s in my family history.
I have all of the symptoms of a thyroid problem except a swollen thyroid gland. So does it sound like I have a thyroid problem or does it sound like a different problem?
I have been experiencing hair loss, excessive sweating, severe depression, severe intolerance of hot climates/surroundings, frequent nausea, and stomach pains since I was seventeen. The year before, I starved myself for a month in order to lose some weight. I have a very prevelent family history of thyroid disorder. I think, perhaps I triggered this with the shock to my metabolism that my anorexia caused. I have been eating regularly since I was 19, but the symptoms persist. What should I do? I am tired of being uncomfortable all of the time, and having thinning hair in parts because of my body’s problem…I’m only 19! My libido is one eighth of what it used to be, and my cognitive abilities aren’t what they once were…I did a bit of research and saw that all of my symptoms lined up with hypothyroidism, and I wish to know where to look or what to eat, or what I can do to change my body back…
i have a hyperactive thyroid and my doctor is giving me the option of taking the iodine treatment.im worried because i heard that it might cure my hyperactive thryroid but later on causes a hypothyroid.
this worries me because hypothyroidism makes people gain weight
so my question is how likely is it for me to develop hypothyroidism after the treatment and if i do will i gain weight excessively?
is there anything i need to know about this treatment?
PLEASE help me because i am very worried!!
I ask because I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 12. When I was first diagnosed I was told I would have to be on medication for the rest of my life even if i decided to have my thyroid removed. After 8 yrs I got tired of being on medication and didn’t want to do it anymore. In my opinion, the more you take the medication the more your body becomes dependant on it. I made a conscious decision to stop taking my mediction, I do not recommend this to ANYONE because this could of actually put me in the hospital. At that time I was in college and experimenting with drugs. I started smoke mary jane around the same time I stopped taking the medication. Exactly 1 yr later I went to my doctor who did the routine blood work, when I went back for my results I was cured. I was scared that I would be repremanded if I told my doctor that I had started smoking and never did. I have never heard of anyone being cured of hypothyroidism, have any of you? Especially from mary j?
I was diagnosised with Graves disease and I am looking far and wide for a holistic oriented type doctor that can heal or manage my hyperthyroid without these horrible medication that I am on called PTU or methimazole and I certainly DO NOT want to destroy my thryroid glands with radioactive iodone treatment (aka ablation) I am only 31 and I will not detsroy a part of my body only to become hypothyroid. These endocrinologist are way too busy robbing and raping me of what’s left of my bank account because I have no health insurance which gives them carte blanche to scare and dismiss me out of their office in a vile 10 mins.
Hi, I have hypothyroidism, and have for years now. I am 18 and every year i have lost weight. I know one of the usual symptoms is gaining weight, can hypothyroidism also cause someone to lose weight?
Here’s a little background info that you’d need to answer my question… before you comment, make sure you read all of this and don’t skip over any details, because I don’t feel like dealing with people who don’t take the time to truly "listen"… I’M ONLY LOOKING FOR HELP AND ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW ABOUT TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE. ALL OTHER ANSWERS WILL BE IGNORED OR GIVEN A POOR RATING.
For a while now I’ve been under extreme psychological stress and depression– the significant stress, "ungroundedness", and instability of my life (which I have little control over) has triggered my depressive tendencies. There’s lots more to tell here… I have a disposition to become depressed due to the environment that I was raised in and the genetic dispositions that I inherited and were nutured within me. I have lots of threatening financial stressors, debts, and home stressors. Furthermore, I come from a very ungrounded background where my parents were very very unstable, inconsistent with their nurturing and emotional states, unpredictable, angry and hormonal/unbalanced mother, emotionally repressed and unavailable father, emotional abuse, my self-esteem was ripped away from me. If it wasn’t for many years of counseling I would have a horrible self-esteem right now– I am still in counseling. My mom had a heart attack at 45 and has diabetes, my dad is hypothyroid and pre-diabetes (my parent’s diabetes is mainly due to their extremely poor diet and lack of exercise). So for years with this upbringing my disposition when under stress has been: depression/irritability, high blood pressure (I’m only 22), feelings of loneliness/emptiness, trouble thinking straight, mild digestive issues (gas/loose stools), trouble getting to sleep, apathy, tension in my shoulders/jaws. Furthermore I even smoked weed for a while and ignorantly took too many yang tonics for over a year and a half like Chinese/korean ginseng, suma, maca, rhodiola, ginger, etc which drained my yin, I have a significantly diminished sense of reality and sense of self. The dreamlike feeling is a very defunct and unsettling feeling. All this has led me to learn more about my condition… I’ve read much literature on ayurvedic medicine, chiropractic medicine, general naturopathic medicine, homeopathic medicine, and last but not least TCM or traditional Chinese medicine; TCM and Chiropractic being most effective so far after having myriads of acupuncture treatments in the past and Chiropractic adjustments on my neck, shoulder, pelvis, back, and hips.
So lately, I’ve gotten more educated on TCM. I’ve found that my body is very drained of yin (in a general sense). My life style and it’s stressors (which I have little control over) drains my yin and results in a rising yang. To support my yin, I have been taking Rehmannia 6 formula. I’ve added to this formula fresh dried goji and schisandra berries with almonds, as well as small amounts of peppermint, lemon balm, and nettle (in capsule form)—this formula is to tonify my liver yin and kidney (jing/yin) as well and to soothe my digestive system. On top of this formula I am eating more yin foods, eating less heavy meats and dairy, and eating a few more sweeter (healthy) foods that will tonify my spleen– I have had some issues with digestion, loose stools, and gas. Likewise to try to better deal with things, I’m getting psychotherapy and am doing light cardio exercise.
The good news here as a result of these dietary/herbal changes is I have already seen: a significant improvement in my levels of irritability and patience; heart rate is 5-6 bpm’s slower; my sex drive is slowly getting back to what it was when I was in highschool (I’m 22 now fyi), my eyes focus better; my tinnitus has lessened (ringing in the ears is something I’ve had all my life); less gas, my physical energy is “cleaner”; my sleep has deepened; I feel more tired in the evenings and get to bed between 8 and 11pm as opposed to before when I wouldn’t feel tired at night and couldn’t really get to sleep until like 5 or 6am… so good improvements here from just taking these herbs and making other dietary changes. I have TCM to thank for these changes that have happened so far. Note: I’m NOT doing acupuncture, qi gong, yoga, or massage because I CANNOT afford these things unfortunately– Right now, all I can afford is herbs (everything else except occasional Chiropractic adjustments is out of my budget). I’m doing what I can while trying to be as smart and educated as possible in my decisions.
What am I getting at here? While there have been some significant improvements in the areas that I mentioned above, my problem is that I haven’t seen an improvement in my mental energy, joy, sense of reality, enthusiasm, zeal, etc (and I still don’t know enough about TCM theory to make the right changes). I don’t feel like taking any uneducated risks without help from people who are educated on this stuff…
My hypothesis is that I’d see an init
My hypothesis is that I’d see an initial change about a week after taking this Rehmannia 6 enhanced formula (which did happen—I don’t think it’s a placebo effect either) BUT wouldn’t see any impact from it on my mood and emotional energy for at least a few months into taking it as it would take a while for my deeper sleep to restore my emotional energy (joy/zeal/enthusiasm) in addition to replenishing my stores of jing and my yin—at least for my specific case.
Is my hypothesis correct that… my deeper sleep and taking the liver/kidney yin formula would slowly build my emotional energy, joy, sense of reality, enthusiasm, etc? OR do I need to consider adding additional herbs for this?
btw, if you read this I greatly appreciate it…
I am 27 years old and me and my husband would like to get pregnant. I only have one ovary, but I have a period every month. My cycles are usually 33-34days. Since I only have one ovary does that mean I only ovulate every other month? Also I am hypothyroid and take synthroid. I am slightly overweight and trying to lose weight b/c due to my long cycles 33-34 days, I am thinking I might perhaps have PCOS. I will see a fertility specialist if I have no luck but I didn’t know if there was anything I can do on my own to up my chances. Also if anyone has any knowledge of having one ovary and getting pregnant I would love your input. Does 34 days cycles mean I have PCOS???? I know these are a lot of questions but I feel like I am getting older now (I’m 27) and I’d really like to get pregnant and hopefully without fertility treatments, I am open to anything though. Thanks!
*** ALso, due to my long cycles, would the ovulation test kits be beneficial to me to figure out when and if I am ovulating????
My doctor told me that I might have hypothyroidism so I had some blood drawn and need to have an ultrasound before they find out if I have it. I was reading about how hypothyroidism is treated and I’m not clear on how long the treatment lasts. Do you have to take synthetic hormones for the rest of your life or just for a little while until it goes back to normal? And I was wondering if it would interact with my birth control, I take Yasmin.
I have hypothyroidism and have found it very dificult to lose weight. I have been trying for about 3 years and dont seem to be getting anywhere. Does anyone know what I can do or take that might work with medication?
I really want laser eye surgery so that I may enjoy water & mountain sports without glasses. I am short sighted (1.25) and have hypothyroid which is medicated. Is this a contra-indication that would prevent the treatment. The phone sales rep that tried to sign me up to laser eye surgery said I could not have it…why not. My thyroid is not attached to my eyesight! Any advice from existing sufferers??? Thanks…
I know bulimia affects teeth but what about Hypothyroidism and hypertension? Do these diseases cause more cavities than say an average healthy person would have? The reason i ask is i never had any cavities until i was about 22 years old and these days it seems i go 3-4 times a year for fillings in addition to my normal bi-annual cleanings.I became hypothyroid around 22 and since that time i have tons of cavities. I was bulimic from ages 13-26 and i know this didn’t help my teeth any. I just wondered what i can do besides twice daily brushings and flossings, plus Act fluoride rinse along with fluoride treatments at my dentists office? I still get cavities even with all of this preventative measures. Whats can i do?
I had radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism about three months ago. I have been to the doctor once since then, about a month ago. I had barely just gotten hypothyroidism. I have gained about ten pounds since then. I am scared it keeps getting worse but do not know anyone who has had this treatment. Also, my fingers and ankles are swelling up and hurting really bad.
Has anyone had experience with radioactive treatment for hyperthyroidism??? What happens and what was your expereience???
what should i do to balance my weight if aim suffering from hypothyroidism
I have no health insurance, no money and right now have unmanaged hypothyroidism. My joints hurt, I sleep all day, I had to stop eating entirely to avoid gaining weight, and at this point I feel like I am close to becoming completely disabled. What are my options? What can I do? I can’t work because I’m too tired and my knees hurt so badly I cannot stand, I’m only 29, but I feel like I’m 79.
Sorry in advance that this is so long! I started to suspect my 7 y/o paint mare was showing signs of what I thought would be hypothyroidism. I called out my vet, he has to see her for her allergies anyway and I ordered some blood work that he suggested. His initial impression was that she was hypothyroid or insulin resistant, but he made it seem like it was more of a thyroid problem than anything and didn’t even suggest that I get her tested for insulin resistance. I’m still waiting on the results of the blood work, it has been about a week and a half. I have another veterinary clinic that I trust to get a second opinion if I need to but this vet that I currently use is extremely well respected and knowledgeable so I will see what he suggests first.
When I did a little research on the subject, I found a couple of medical studies and articles that said that the normal blood panel for thyroid problem testing for T3 and T4 levels is not accurate enough to fully diagnose a horse as hypothyroid. They also go on to state that most horses that have been diagnosed as having thyroid problems are actually insulin resistant or are in early stages of Cushing’s disease and that confirmed cases of thyroid problems are extremely rare.
So…I’m not quite sure what to think now. She does show a few of the signs of Cushing’s: cresty neck, easy keeper (even though I manage her weight she does sometimes get fat deposits but they are not in strange areas on her body), sometimes lethargic (this may be related to the heat here), and has a slightly decreased immune system. I was told that vertical ridges in her hooves, weak hooves, and her mane and tail rubbing are also signs of these diseases by a friend of the family. I don’t know if there is any truth to the hoof ridges but the mane and tail rubbing also can tie in to her skin allergies and fly/mosquito allergies. She’s on antihistamines for that. She however does not drink an excessive amount (I usually have to make sure she has extra salt to encourage her to drink), does not have a thick shaggy coat or slow shedding, or abnormal urination.
Does anyone have a horse with any of these diseases who could give me any insight on if any of this sounds familiar to you and what treatments your horse is on and the cost that I would be looking at here? Any vets, vet techs, anyone with medical experience, etc that could offer some help would be greatly appreciated as well.
*Selling her is not an option because I am very afraid she would end up in the kill pen if she is diagnosed with this disease combined with her other health problems. She is very well taken care of here.*
Thank you all for your answers!
She doesn’t have the coat of Cushing’s horses. Her coat is extremely short and thin, even in winter.
I realize that the mane and tail rubbing is most likely from her allergies and fly and mosquito hypersensitivity, I had just heard that it was also related to these other diseases and was wondering if there was any truth to that. She is currently treated for the itching twice daily plus the antihistamines and for the mane and tail re-growth. The lethargy is unrelated to the antihistamines, she has always been kind of pokey (especially in summer) but she has a shiny coat and bright eyes. I wasn’t sure if this was related either.
She has access to several salt/trace mineral blocks at all times and I see her frequently licking them several times a day.
Thank you all so much for the info and links, so many great answers
The fly and mosquito allergies are actually quite common where I live in southern Louisiana but she has other allergies as well. The climate here is horrible for animals and people with allergies, myself included. I’m miserable so I can only imagine how she feels. I’m still waiting to her from the vet on the rest of the results and from what it sounds, she doesn’t have hypothyroidism but that isn’t a surprise. I will have him come out and draw blood to do the test for the insulin resistance. He couldn’t do it from the blood he drew the other day because she hadn’t been fasting. Hopefully each problem will improve together, it seems when one disorder is off, it throws the whole body out of whack. I’m researching diet changes now to see what I can do to make small adjustments until I find out for sure if this is the problem. I don’t want to do anything major based on my hunch alone.
I also forgot to mention that I would consider selling her to someone in the Midwest or Northwest (she originally came from Iowa) where there are not so many nasty bugs, allergens, heat, and humidity as there are here. I don’t want her to suffer so it would be unreasonable for anyone to tell me that I am selfish for keeping her here because of her allergies. However, with her other health issues and that she is still relatively green broke and needs an advanced intermediate and up rider…I have valid reason to be concerned that she’d be sent to the kill pen because healthy horses are these days. Selling is not an option unless I can no longer manage her care and until I get the health concerns straightened out to where I can at least educate potential new owners on how to manage them. And to avoid that, I would rather relocate from Louisiana because I’m sick constantly and I really can’t stand the weather here either!
I’ve always been more prone to hyper-responding to stressful situations. I was an anxious child growing up and there was a lot of verbal and emotional abuse in my home, so I suppose my "fight or flight" mechanism had an easy trigger. Anyway, years later I find that I unconsciously place myself in high stress situations (demanding job, dramatic friendships, over-scheduling myself) because I think i must be drawn to the adrenaline burst that feels so normal to me. Most recently my husband was hospitalized for a serious illness from which he recovered, but while he was ill I did not sleep for 3 days and i continued working and taking care of our 2 young children. Very stupid of me, I know. I put off taking care of myself too much and now I am paying for it. The problem now is that my body is no longer recovering from those intesnse situations and I have been suffering from insomnia for the past few months, have had two flu-like viruses in the past 4 months from which I feel I never fully recovered, and my hair is beginning to fall out more than the usual 100 strands or whatever is the norm. I feel beyond tired, shakey, swollen glands, headaches, muscle tension, etc., etc. I read about adrenal fatigue (my mother has just been diagnosed with hypothyroid, which is what led me the adrenal fatigue info when I was researching hypothyroidism). I have always been petite, but in the last 3 months I have dropped from 112 lbs to 95 lbs. ( I am 5 feet tall, so 95 is still in the healthy weight range, but the low end of it). I am trying to put the weight back on but i am struggling to gain it. I have started supplements to help with adrenal fatigue and I have been making sure I get in to bed early and sleep as late as I can, occassionally taking melatonin to help me sleep a little better. My question is: does anyone have experience with this who could give me some advice on what to eat, how to schedule my activities, ways to manage the stress, etc. so i can repair whatever damage i have done and keep from relapsing? All suggestions are very much appreciated. Sorry for the novella, I didn’t mean to give my whole life story, I just wanted to give a thorough description of my problem. thanks again!
I took an online screener and it said i prolly have hypothyroids as i have not had a period since december, gained weight very fast, very fatigued and my temp is in the 96’s…I already have 3 kids but wondering
*what the treatment for hypothy. is?
*Will my thyroid go back to normal with treatment?
*how long will it take?
*will my period return during treatment?
*and will i be able to get pregnant again once treatment has started?
pls answer my questions, this is important to me and can see doc until the end of month…thxxxx
p.s i am NOT pregnant!
I just said i am going to doc the end of this month! Read the question!
I’ve been doing bbt tracking, and I’ve noticed that my highest basal cell temperature in the morning was 36.8F. It’s most often between 36.1-36.5.
I believe I’ve had a thyroid test, and it was normal. I first realised my body temperature might too low when I was using a fertility chart and had to change the range since my waking temperature has never even reached 37 degrees C. I sleep pretty normally, and usually wake up naturally around the same time every day.
The thing is, I don’t tend to feel cold, and although I weigh more than I did when I was younger and can’t seem to lose it, I’m still pretty slim. I do have some symptoms that appear to be consistent with hypothyroidism, but some are not. For example, I don’t have any throat problems and I rarely ever feel cold even with a low body temperature.
Is it within a normal range, or are can it be a symptom of something besides thyroid disorders?
