I am hypothyroid and lost my thyroid from radiation treatments for cancer. I’ve been on a synthetic replacement, levothyroxine, for almost five years now. I’ve heard that natural thyroid meds are better than synthetic. Does anyone know the difference? Have any of you taken the natural and had success? (I hear it comes from thyroid glands of pigs.) My synthetic thyroid meds have always given me too many adverse side effects, namely irritability…even when I’m in target range. Could natural thyroid treatments be the better option? (oh, and I do have an appointment to discuss this with my doc in November…just looking for opinions.) Thanks!

I am a 33 year old, healthy woman. I am now hypothyroid after having 2 RAI treatments to kill my thyroid and my levels are normal. I had hypothyroidism and Graves’ for at least 7 years, so my eyes were pretty bad. Now that I have been "normal" for the past 2 years, my eyes have gotten better, until recently. I was rubbing under my left eye, accidentally moved the lower lid too far and my eyeball fell out. Nothing was injured, I was treated for an infection and that’s it. The worst part is that I can’t sleep, I worry that it will come out again, and I’m so very tired of it. How do I convince my doctor and opthalmologist that I really do need surgery although I’m "not a severe enough case" to them?I appreciate any advice or help you can give me.

My docotor is testing my blood for thyroid problems, and I would like to know what treatments they may suggest if I do have any problems. Also, what are the possible issues with my thyroid that they may be checking for? Signs and symptoms? Not sure if this makes a difference, but I am a 22 yr old female - two children/c-section.

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for about 6 months now. I started charting a month ago and have found that my bbt’s are in upper 96-to lower 97 degree ranges. A friend of mine that has been charting for years and she said that could be a sign of hypothyroid. I have a lot of the symptoms of a hypothyroid. I have an appointment to see my doctor next month. My question is does anyone here have a hypothyroid and what are the treatments? Did you find it difficult to conceive? Thank you for your help!

I have hypothyroidism and trying to lose weight any suggestions for a diet for people with hypothyroidism?

I recently had some tests done on my thyroid and the results show that my levels are in the normal range but on the high side. So my doctor is referring me to a endocrinologist to see if i would need any treatment.

My doctor appointment isn’t until April so I was just wondering if someone were to high levels, would it mean they have hyper or hypo thyroid ism??

I heard if your TSH is HIGHER than normal than you have HYPOTHYROID. Hyperthyroid is when your TSH is too low and your thyroid is overactive.

I was tested for hypothyroid, and I’m a bit confused about the results. My doctor says that I am fine, which surprised him, since before the tests, he was pretty sure I had a thyroid disorder because of my symptoms. My TSH test came back 3.035, which he said was borderline and sent me for a thyroid peroxiase ab test, which was 23.0, well within normal. Because the second test was normal, he said I was okay. Is this accurate? It’s kind of hard to find good answers on this, since it seems to be so hard to diagnose. I don’t want to beat a dead horse if this isn’t a problem, but if it is, I want proper treatment, you know?

Can both be treated by anti-depressants or is the depression caused by hypothyroidism treated by an adjustment to thyroid medication. I’m curious about the connection.

I had hypothyroidism and treated it aggressively, with gradually increasing my Synthroid dosage. My endocrinologist was of the opinion that we’re going to shoot to put me at the low end of the normal range of TSH, because I was very depressed. My psychiatrist was happy with that too. When I was hypo, I was not only depressed, but always had chills, was very tired, gained weight, and was losing hair. Now, after two years of treatment, I am much thinner and have more physical energy. The problem is that I think my hair is falling at an even faster rate, it is dull and lifeless. I thought that hair loss was typically a hypothyroid symptom. Is it not? Is my low TSH causing my hair to fall?

I have been married for over 20 years to the same woman that was my high school sweetheart. Things started out great, and just got better until ……..
Seven years ago, she was daignosed with BiPolar. We made it through that. Some suicide attempts, and lots of arguements. Then there are the supervisors and co-workers that thought I was making things up to get off from work. That didnt make the journey any easier.
Six months ago she fell and hit her head, and now can not remember ANYthing. Our marriage, travel, children, friends, or family. She remembers nothing and no one !!!!
She has been going to therapy and prescribed medications for the treatment of Disociative Fugue which is a stress induced amnesia. It is supposed to be temporary, and supposed to have gone away by now.
Last week she was staying with a close family member (after MUCH email and telephone traffic). Thought this would be beneficial.
Come to find out, she abuses her meds. She either takes too much, or none at all.
She also took some of her family members Percocet, and sleeping pills (stole them). All in a two week period !!!!

My kids are naturally upset, fed up, and growing to resent her. They feel she is faking, and have pointed out some episodes where my wife will make a comment, or say something that suggest she can remember more than she lets on.
I have been VERY VERY patient with all of this mess. But I need to do something soon. She is not the same person that I married 20 years ago. She verbally abuses us, and threatend to call the police to take me away a few weeks ago after an arguement that we had. (Yes, she was loosing that arguement). We have endured multiple ER visits, ambulance calls, spoiled food, several messes, water left running, house being unlocked, windows open in the winter without turning down the furnace, abuse of meds, and stealing meds from family. She has lost two jobs in 3 months, and wrecked our family vehicle because her thyroid level was WAY too low (from NOT taking her meds) and she passed out.
She gets upset with medical personnel, docs, Nurses, Therapist, Pharmacists, etc …… when she doesnt get the demoral shot that she wants for her migraine headaches. She has NO patience, and is hardly the kind of person that you would want to talk to in public.
After her fall, they did a CAT SCAN, MRI and EEG. The Neurologist told her that everything was normal, but the EEG showed some brain activity that resembles the same as someone with seizures. POOF !!! Now she has seizures.

I am tired of this hypocondriac, hypothyroid, BiPolar addict that thinks I will be here forever to clean up her messes, and take care of her just because our wedding vows say "In sickness and in Health."

I would like to hear some suggestions on HOW to get her committed so we can have a break.

I have been diagnosed with PCOS and I have an extremely high testosterone level (over 200 the last time it was checked). I spoke with my endocrinologist earlier this year about starting Clomid. Due to some life altering circumstances I have not been back to see her (I know it’s not the smartest thing).

My husband and I want to conceive and although I know it is very hard if not close to impossible without treatment. BUT the strangest thing has been happening over the last three months. On July 29 I got my period, in mid August I had symptoms consistent with ovulation (sore breasts, lower abdominal pain, etc). I thought was pregnant because I had nausea as well. SO it turns out that I am not pregnant BUT I did start my cycle on August 27. So I have been reading blogs and articles on babyhopes.com and I came across an ovulation calender. According to this calender I should be fertile September 11 - 15 and ovulation should start around the 15th-16th. I was kinda psyched cause it mentioned something about cervical mucous and as of yesterday I have noticed what I believe to be cervical mucous. In a nut shell I have been feeling like this may be it, that finally after 9 years of trying I may be able to conceive but I am concerned about the high testosterone level.

If I am ovulating can I still conceive despite the elevated testosterone?? I have not had it checked since February of this year so is there some chance that it may have gone down thus allowing me to ovulate??

Another bit of info on me , I also have Hypothyroid that I do take Levothyroxine for.

I’m 22 and I’m starting to suspect that I do. But one of the risk factors is being above 50 years in age. Is there any woman here in her twenties who has hypothyroidism?

I have hypothyroidism. Are there any natural / holistic treatements for it? Any supplements that would help??

out your husband with the bills bc you guys are struggling a little bit. I mean it’s not a big huge deal. We got our phones cut off for a couple of weeks and that was the only major thing. It’s not like we are starving. Everyone goes thru rough times once in a while, right? Well it’s not that I do want to work. I am really sick right now. I just found out a year ago that I was diabetic and hypothyroid along with anemia and have major depression/anxiety issues and I had a major stomach infection that is off and on that caused ulcers and a few more illnesses. Well due to all these ailments I got fired from a really good job bc of all my dr appts. I have been pretty sick for at least 10 yrs but I am just barely getting ANY treatment that started about a year ago. Well I also lost about 70 pounds in the process of being sick. It’s like everyone forgot all about me being sick and are asking my diet secrets. WTF? And I cannot work right now and it’s really got me down as it is and now he’s saying these hurtful things. My hubby told him to stay out of it but I feel really hurt now and it’s really making me angry. What would you do?
I last worked right before summer and all I ask is for the rest of the year to heal and try to feel better so I can hit it hard next year.
But after all this, I don’t even want to ask my husband to even buy my medicine bc I’m already a burden as it is. It’s like 200 dollars a month with insurance.
Yes we are a team-it’s not like I lie in bed all day. I do keep the house in line and do wife duties. But I can’t help that I am sick. I have to get well. Time is needed; these things just don’t go away overnight.
He said: "She needs to get a job already."

I don’t want to go to the doctor but my thyroid is not working real well. Just curious if it could be controlled with out medication? I heard that iodine and selenium were both good for your thyroid. Want to know if that is true? I’ve never been on the medication for it and i’d prefer not to start if I can help it.

well i have problems with my thyroid since age 15 i have hypothyroid first then a year later after diagnosis they told me i have graves’s disease they gave me treatment but no success i have 9 nodules in my thyroid so my thyroid levels wasn’t the adequate and i was always sick so i have surgery to completely remove my thyroid, since then i have been taking replacement meds (levothyroxine 125 mcg) when Im not pregnant my thyroid levels remains ok not perfect but ok to function, now Im pregnant and my thyroid levels are out of whack , should i let my OB doctor treat me since Im pregnant? should i go back to my family doctor? or should i call my endocrinologist which i haven’t seen since my surgery??

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after the birth of my daughter 2 years ago, sadly, dispite exercise and healthier eating habits, I have not lost any weight since the day I came home with her. I would really like to lose about 20 pounds and have 5 months to work with.

I asked this question twice before but there wasn’t too much useful information provided plus a few more symptoms developed. First of all I have a thyroid disorder (hypothyroid) and I take the generic pill Synthroid. I am sexually active and use latex condoms. He is my only partner but we are only friends with benefits. My problem is that I started having this brownish vaginal spotting a few days ago. It started gradually getting darker and a bit more heavier. Soon some red was present in with the brown, but only a little. Afterwards I had skin tissue or something coming out. Some as small as a Cheerio and some were almost as big as, say, birth control patch. Then I began with my regular period. My periods have had a history of being irregular because of my thyroid but it has been constant for over two years coming at the last week of each month. This time it came two weeks early. There was no foul smell or wierd color that sugested I had an infection like Ghonorreah (sp?). There was though a very itchy feeling (though no visible rash) with an occasional heat feeling as well as soreness. Everything is strating to go away SLOWLY now. I’m still on the rag. If this helps, I’m of course a girl, 18, had viral meningitis when I was 12ish, had radioactive iodine treatment for my then hyperthyroid when I was 15, am moderately depressed for personal past issues, and that’s about it. Could I have an STI/STD, miscarriage, or is this hormone related?
The tissues were red in color.

What is the best treatment for hyperthyroidism …if I want to conceive again and beta blockers make you infertal and surgery can make you hypo and radiation treatment can cure it but also make you hypothyroid..I also dont want to take a thyroid pill that will kill my liver..does anyone have this that can give me advise before my apoitnment with the endocronologist?
I dont want to get hypothyroid, I dont want to gain weight, I dont want liver failure, I dont want to loose my sex drive and I want to have more kids in the future.

Please help without sending me links..My mind is in a frenzy and I have tried to read everything under the sun.
I have not been diagnosed with graves (knock on wood) I just got diagnosed 1 week ago and my left thyroid side is moderately swollen and my right is normal. I was under severe stress when this onsetted and was also exposed to chemicals. Thank you so much for your answer. i am going to google all the meds you have given me.

looking for options in addition to medication

Lately my periods have been getting later and later each month. I’ve always been irregular before but recently i’ve been pretty regular exept for the fact that i have been getting it later and later each month. During the month of October i did not get it at all exept for some brown discharge, i took a pregnancy test and i’m not pregnant. I’m some what concerned because although i’ve been very irregular before i havent been for atleast 6 months. I also have hypothyroid which resulted in me having polysistic ovary sindrome about two years ago. I was on a 6 month treatment and things were fine. i was still a little rirergular but nothing serious (like going mnths and months wihtout a period like i was before the treatment) Should i worry??? did this happen to anyone else besides me????
Yes i’ve been very stressed and my diet changed alot (i lost over 10 lbs!!!!) and i stopped taking my thyroid pill….
thanks ladies! im calling my Doctor tomorrow!!!
