So, I have been struggling with thyroid problems for the past 3 years. I originally had hyperthyroidism and then had the radioactive iodine treatment and had hypothyroid. The last time I went to my doctor he told me if I was experiencing any hyperthyroid symptoms (from my higher dose of medication to raise my thyroid to normal) that I should call him and get my blood done. So I was feeling a little weird and having bowel problems (constipation, diarrhea, etc.) So I got my blood done, and he called me saying my thyroid was normal and that I should just continue with the medicine I was taking. I decided to just stick it out and wait to feel better. But last week I had severe constipation and then the past 4 days I have had nashua and have not been able to eat(no appetite) and having diarrhea multiple times a day. Is this anything to do with my thyroid? Because whenever I feel sick (which is like everyday) it always turns out to be my thyroid, or is it something else? I would hate for it to be something serious and I didn’t do anything about it. I tried talking to my doctor but he insisted that I was fine and just to continue with my medication. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

I am 2 months pregnant with baby #1 and recently found out that I have hypothyroidism. My doc says it’s okay to take the meds she prescribed w little affect on the baby…but this is the same hospital that told my Grandpa he had bronchitis for a month-he died 2 months later of lung cancer. Is my doc right?

I noticed a pea sized nodule on my throat, thyroid. I have had an ultrsound and needle biopsy. The biopsy showed abnormal cells so I am going to have surgery to remove the thyroid. What takes place in this surgery? Don’t know what to expect!! Kinda scared too!

what should i do

Last fall I had some blood work done and found out I have hypothyroidism. My level is 4.75 and my doctor said the normal range is 3. She started me on Synthroid 100mcg. I took it in the morning and it made me so sleepy that I could not function and had a hard time staying alert to care for my daughter. I spoke to my doctor and she said I could take it at night. I was still getting sleepy though so I stopped taking it after a few weeks with no improvement. I had blood work done at the end of February and my level is still off so I saw my doctor about trying a different medication. She put me on Levoxyl 25mcg and I am taking my first dose in the morning. I have heard that once you are on the medication you will have an increase in energy and that if you are getting sleepy that the dose is too low or high. Has anyone else had this problem with the medication? I know it can be hard to pinpoint the exact dose but my level is just barely off, some people have a level 50. I just want to get my level in the normal range to prevent any other conditions. Right now my plan is to try my best to stay on the Levoxyl for two months straight so I can see where my level is with the medication. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Let me correct myself. I am suddenly sleepy from the medication. I had no fatigue before I began the medication. The medication is what made me sleepy. And I understand that Synthroid and Levoxyl are basically the same but my doctor suggested trying a different medication to see if there was something in the Synthroid causing me to become sleepy.

unable to take thyroid supplements due to another medical disorder? (Don’t answer this question if you don’t believe in intuition.)

My friend has been diagnosed with hypothyroid and claims she will go about fixing it naturally but here is the problem. She has had this for 4 years and has experienced all of the symptoms, weight gain, feeling tired, intolerance to cold, and the list goes on and on. I am afraid she wills slip into a coma and die from her not taking any action. She is now experience numbing in her toes and her memory is now being effected. So my question is, how long do you think she has before things start getting serious? Anyone with experience on this subject, your comments will be much appreciated.

Although i have a hypothyroid i don’t think it is at all related to that since it’s under control. It’s also not that my hair is in need of a treatment since the rest of it is fine. The hairs are not grey (i’ve gotten grey hair before with the same texture as this) and they are able to be colored (tried that too). it just came on a few weeks ago and it’s not letting up. i’m 32. is there a mineral deficiency or could this be from stress? thanks for your help!

I have started getting gray hair. I am 27, so maybe I am not going "prematurely" gray, but I was just wondering if having a thyroid disorder could cause the gray. I have had problems in the past with hair loss due to my under-active thyroid and was wondering if perhaps the gray is another symptom. Any thoughts?

I have had trouble losing weight forever. I finally went to the doctor to see if there was something wrong with me. It turns out, i have hypothyroidism. I just started the medication today. Will it help me lose weight? or what exactly do the meds do? I don’t really know anything about hypothyroidism except that my thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones to keep my metabolism working at a steady rate. any information about hypothyroidism would be great!

I am hypothyroid (did radiation treatment due to Graves). I was taking Levothyroxin for a little over a year with no problems. Now for almost the past year my periods have been off (I’ve only gotten a period every 3-4 months). I went to the doc (almost 2 months ago) and they readjusted my levels…however still no period. How long does it take to be normal again?? Anyone else gone that long without periods?? PS Not pregnant and not having sex…so that’s not an option.
It’s not like I don’t know anything…believe me I’ve researched my condition. How can you test your own levels?

I spoke with the actual Army, Navy, etc branches and they said it was disqualifying. So I was curious as to whether the Reserve branches would accept someone with it.

I am a man in my 40s, 6′ tall, 68 kg (around 150 pounds). For breakfast I usually just have a glass of chocolate milk, sometimes compounded by another one at work.

At work, as it is customary in this country we have just slices of bread with things on top. I put kind of a salad, or ham and then cheese. I eat usually around 2-3 slices (not double slices as in a sandwich).

When I get home I usually do not feel the need to eat dinner. Very rarely in which case I eat something. Otherwise I just have fiber cereal and in some cases I just eat something because I think I should.

I sometimes wonder if there is something wrong with me. I thought the treatment for hypothyroid would help but nope. I am not anorexic as I love food, I just don’t feel like stuffing myself up.

Weekends same thing, I can go nearly a whole day without eating and just a few glasses of natural juice, PERHAPS a cereal and on ocassion a small snack.

Any ideas? or anybody out there with the same problem?
Forgot to mention that my cholesterol levels are lower than usual (thanks God! I can’t swallow pills). Since my early 20’s I have taken care of not eating much fatty stuff (except for ocassional chips).

A few years ago I was diagnosed with mild hypothyroidism and given the choice of taking medicine or not. I decided not to because I didn’t want to start taking something that would hook me for life, but my sypmtoms seem to be getting worse. I have a low body temperature and am constantly tired. Cutting sugar out of my diet has helped a lot but I’m wondering if there are some herbs or vitamins that I should take. Eventually I’ll go to the endocronologist, but until then, what causes thyroid problems and what can I do to treat them myself in the meantime?

Just as a little back story, I’m 5′4, 230lbs, 21 years old. I started using sparkpeople in April at 250. I’ve been continually eating 1200-1700 calories a day, exercising 4-5 times a week (30 min cardio, strength training) eating my fruits and veggies and drinking 8 glasses of water per day. I lost those 20 lbs within the first 2 months and I have been at a standstill. I exercise more, i eat less… any of the combinations of things. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke and I don’t drink soda. I’m currently under doctors treatment for hypothyroid and my levels are steady… but I’m at my absolute wits end with this weight loss stuff. Ive talked to my doctor and she just says "eat less" which I know isn’t going to help if I’m already only eating what I am now. I would consider meeting with another heath care professional, but I don’t need anyone to tell me "eat vegetables" because I already am. ANY help is appreciated… I just don’t know where to go from here!

is that because the accumulation of iodine in the thyroid gland as a result of the high level increase of T3 and T4?

For many years I have had extreme problems due to my hypothyroidism. I have dark course hair on my face, stomach, back, buttock, and legs(I am female so this is not normal.) I also get hot flashes, overactive sweating, extreme weight loss and weight gain. I have been on Synthroid medication int he past and this hasn’t helped wtih any of these things. Would a thyroidectomy solve these problems for me?

Sometime back I wrote saying I have hyperthyroid….just called up the doctor and she said that I actually have "hypothyroid".
She has scheduled an appointment with an endocronologist.
I will be going there sometime this week.

Now tell me, did any of you face this problem? Or atleast do you know what is the treatment for hypothyroid and how long do we have to undergo this treatment for before it cures itself? Also, does it really have such a big impact on fertility?

I just discovered thyroid disorders, and some of the symptoms match up. However, I am not gaining weight, and that seems to be a key issue with thyroid disorders.

I had: ER visits regularly with heart attack symptoms and could not breath. I had: anemia, depression, lack of labido, impotense, elevated cholesterol, recurrent headaches, swollen appendages, retained water, swollen legs and ankles-edema, decreased body hair, no energy, hypertension to name a few. My throat has no motility and I have 6 herniated disks. 2 years ago, I was evaluated to fix my throat-I choke when I eat and in my sleep-the food comes up or will not go down. After 2 years, the VA contacted me about performing the surgery-While I was being evaluated for this surgery-I was fed a sandwich with nuclear meds in it-then I was strapped in a machine to do a cat scan-the technician left the room and I began to choke as the sandwich started to come up-I began to aspirate-I yelled for help-I was alone-I forced my way out of the machine as help arrived-they knew I would choke if laid down after eating.
I am on pain meds for the herniated discs. Recently, my meds dose was halved-my pain level went from 3-4 to 5-8. After a few months and numerous complaints, the VA doc cut my meds again and told me to record my pain and would adjust it in a month-it is out of control.
The VA put me on depression meds 2.5 years ago and did not see me for this-no follow up even when I reported suicidal ideations-it was later discovered that the med I was on was counterindicated because I have asthma and it was creating situations that caused me to go to the ER because I could not breath.
If it had not been for a VA social worker treating me for PTSD and an outside the VA DR, I would have died.
I was on 4 meds that cause:weight gain, depression and suicidal idiasions-I gained 70# in a year and had reported suicidal idiasions for more than a year before being able to see a mental health specialist.
Is the VA liable for the treatment and lack of treatment I have been given? Do they have to reimburse me for the outside medical treatment I was given.
I reported this treatment to the VA patient rep and I get no response. I have lab reports that are abnormal and the VA does not tell me their results.

I am fed up now from these tablets.Should i stop taking thyroixn tablets? My SERUM TSH s 1.4 ulU/ml..

Just wondering cos I was treated for hyperthyroidism, and can become hypothyroid because of the RAI treatment, the doctor sais there is a 50/50 chance of this happening. She said when I start gaining weight this is a sign. The thing is I eat really healthy, no junk food, no alcohol, no white bread , no prepacked foods etc, so will I still gain weight eating a healthy diet.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a month ago and was put on Levothyroxine. I am still feeling run down and tired and my muscles and joints in my legs hurt so bad I can barely walk sometimes. Do I need to talk to my endocrinologist and get a different medication or do I need to give it a little longer? Is it normal to hurt so bad?
I had a full blood work up, the only other thing that it shoed was anemia. My TSH was 246.42.

Hey everybody.

I hope you can help me..

I’m a 16 year old female (almost 17). I’ve been losing my eyebrow hairs for about a year. The skin around the eyebrow area is dry and flaky.

Could this be a sign of a thyroid problem? I mean… when I look on websites, it says OUTER THIRD OF EYEBROW.. But I’m losing eyebrow hairs from ALL parts of the eyebrow.

I have seen a derm and a doctor - both were no help.
I had a blood test done in January and my thyroid levels came back normal
I tried the basal thermometer (with a regular digital thermometer), and my temperature was 96.5.

Do you think I have a thyroid problem? How can I know for SURE?

other symptoms:
constipation, dry flaky skin all over my face, eyebrow loss, acne, cold hands and feet.

please help me
=/

thank you!
No one in my family has a thyroid problem (not that we know of)… and yes, I did fast for 10 hours.
=(

thank you for answering.
